Chromeo (DJ set)

When they released their first album in 2004, Rick James was still the Antichrist to all but the enlightened. Fast forward to today, and ‘80s funk—which makes up a major part of Chromeo’s DNA— is all over the charts. So it’s the perfect time for a fresh dose of the real stuff and—lo and behold—Pee (still looking a smooth criminal in a Coogi) and Dave (ever the Semitic/Gallic heartthrob in tight pants) are back.

We are officially on the cusp of the Canadian funk lords’ fourth album’s release. It’s called White Women and it’s a doozy.White Women is the band at its most ambitious, with both the pop and the muso elements of Chromeo pushed into the red. On the hooky side, we’ve got instant classics like the soaring “Come Alive” and the pulsating “Frequent Flyer” which offer moments that would make Hall & Oates and Wham green with envy. On the crate-digger side, Dave and Pee employ an unprecedented analog arsenal that wouldmake Kraftwerk drool.

April Towers

Nottingham synth-pop duo April Towers have supported the likes of Tove Lo, Kyla La Grange and Indiana.

RIVRS

“RIVRS AKA Charlotte, Fin and Fred are part of that young British generation of crossover acts craftily merging sweet pop and future beat”

On the snaky ‘Last Love’, a big, soulful lyrical tide comes crashing over ethereal synths and bouncy beatbox for a poignant moonlit tearjerker. The track, their first release, features on Kitsune’s much revered New Faces Compilation which gave birth to acts such as Two Door Cinema Club, Hot Chip, Years & Years to name a few…The band have recently become a three piece having been joined by the incredible Fred McClaren (previously of Post War Years) on drums.

Despite only having played only a handful of shows to date a recent review of their live show was described as bringing “sultry tunes with an almost Beyoncé-like tinge to the proceedings”.

Project Fresh Socks

Project Fresh Socks are two Norwegian girls who undertook a mission in 2010 – to become DJs – and they’ve been flying since. They tackled their first gig on NYE 2010/2011 having never touched a deck. Now, two years in, they boast a range of London residencies, several festivals performances, participance in the Red Bull’s Academy’s festival in the London Eye, a sold out Nordic Electronica night at the Roundhouse and a truck load of live gigs under their furry Nordic belts. They are known to fill a dance-floor wherever they go with their house, tech and electro sounds. Endorsing their heritage as they blast the music scene, it’s not rare for them to sneak in an obscure remix from their favorite underground Nordic acts.
